History of the Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon (AcaDec) has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1968 by Dr. Robert Peterson. Inspired by his experiences as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany, Dr. Peterson envisioned a program that would challenge and inspire students to reach their full potential.
Founding of Academic Decathlon. Dr. Peterson’s dream of creating a decathlon of studies was realized when he became a school superintendent. In 1968, he launched the first Academic Decathlon competition in Orange County, California. The program aimed to foster academic excellence, teamwork, and personal growth among high school students.
Expansion And Growth. The success of the initial Academic Decathlon competition led to its rapid expansion throughout California and beyond. In 1979, the California Academic Decathlon was established as a formal organization. In 1981, the United States Academic Decathlon was established as a formal national organization. In April 1982, the first USAD was held with eighteen states participating.
